Please read our past newsletters which will provide you with a useful oversight of what we have been up to at Highbury Roundhouse and the benefits we bring to our community.

Welcome to our

Winter Newsletter 2024

In this Autumn Newsletter, you can read an update about our Summer activities and some exciting new services delivered from our new building.

We had a jam-packed summer where we believe our hardworking team made a positive difference to people's lives.

We are excited to announce that a range of new services are now available in our new centre, which includes the opening of a new Older People's Service. Our centre is also becoming the home of many youth services, making Highbury Roundhouse a hub destination for young people.

We would love to invite you to come and try some of the new classes available and to try out our Community Cafe, which serves cold and hot drinks and light lunches and snacks.
We hope you enjoy the reading.

What did we do during the Summer 2023

HAF - Holiday Activities and Food Summer Programme

Highbury Roundhouse Summer Holiday Playscheme

We ran the HAF (Holiday Activities & Food) in partnership with Islington Council.
Targeting families whom were accessing free school meals, unable to access out of school activities, those who may experience social and economic isolation or suffer in terms of nutrition and physical health.
Also, parents of children with SEND, those with Education Health Care Plans or Care Plans.

We ran two playschemes during the Summer holidays at Hanover Primary school and Yerbury Primary School, both open for 5 weeks, from 9am to 5pm, and offered childcare for children aged from 4 to 11 years.

Specialist activities at both centres included:
• Trunk Theatre Company - came to Hanover to deliver an interactive show about The Great Fire of London, Yerbury also came to take part in this event.
• ZooLab - Hands on session at both centres where children get to meet & learn about small animals.
• Skates & Ladders - Specialist skateboarding company came and delivered a 2 hour sessions at both centres.
• Slime workshops  -  Art Tutor Andrea came to deliver 2 sessions at each centre.
• Vicky (science technician) - delivered 4 science workshops.
• Bouncy castle - This was based at Hanover for the duration of playscheme.

We had a total booking of 2,212, which of those 419 were children with SEND and 191 had a Education Health Care Plan (EHCP).

Trips out included: Bowling, Highgate Woods, Vue cinema, London zoo, Narrow boat trip on Regents Canal. EYFS children enjoyed visits to The Little Angel Theatre and a guided tour of Freightliners farm. There was also a weekly session of football coaching, Yoga & cheerleading for each centre. Some of the popular activities were a talent show, sports day and junk modelling competition. We also invested in a 12ft paddling/swimming pool which was one of the centre highlights for this summer. The children loved it!

HAF Youth Summer Fun Summerversity 2023

This was our first HAF provision specifically for young people aged 11-15, we integrated this with our usual youth sessions, the young people enjoyed the different outings which included trips to the museum, and a tour of Buckingham palace.

The objective was to get the young people to have a real sense of London and to see what’s out there as many of them do not get the chance to go out and explore.

As well as spending a lot of time outdoors we also got the chance to do some baking with them and embrace the lovely weather by taking them to picnics.

Summerversity was another opportunity to help young people make the most of their summer holiday.
Highbury Roundhouse held two projects, a graffiti and upcycling textiles workshop, both of which were a success. Young People produced some phenomenal work which they were all very proud of, it took time and dedication but with perseverance they pulled through and by the end of the week they had some amazing things to share. We look forward to next summer!

Trips

Our youth club went to Almeida Theatre to watch Romeo and Juliet a some of our young people's expressed their interest in watching a play, This was their first time in a theatre and they seemed to enjoy the play.
During our HAF program the youth club also went out on five-day trips.

Young Londoners Research Project

Watch the Highbury Roundhouse's video  to find out what are the barriers young people face to access professional mental health support. 97 young Islington residents aged between 13 and 18 years old participated in our research.
